Drummer boys in the Civil War era acted as essential, non-combatant communications conduits on the battlefield, using specific, rhythmic drum beats to relay officer orders for maneuvering, marching, and attacking amid chaotic noise. They also served as stretcher bearers, carried water, and assisted surgeons with wounded soldiers during and after battles.
