By Frank Schulenburg - Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0, 72x32 inch cardboard cutout of Benjamin Banneker. He is known for building America's first wooden clock, accurately predicting eclipses, helping survey Washington D.C., and publishing influential almanacs that challenged slavery and advocated for civil rights. He became a symbol of Black intellectual capability, using his scientific platform to fight racial injustice and correspond directly with Thomas Jefferson, making him a pivotal figure in early American science and abolitionism.
